The scientists and breeders at Strube Research are the initiators and main partners of the exciting MODEFY project. Essentially, the aim is to research the basics of the problem of yellowing virus in sugar beet and develop suitable measures.

The five-year project goal is to find technical solutions to combat viral yellowing, which can lead to a yield loss of up to 50%. Together with Deleplanque, the ITB and INRAE, Strube Research is setting out to find solutions to the problem. In the following article, all project partners are introduced in more detail:

Deleplanque is an independent French seed company that focuses equally on production and distribution in the seed business and propagates a large proportion of the sugar beet varieties bred by Strube. The company employs 50 people and has a turnover of 50 million euros. The company’s capital is held mainly by the Deleplanque family and its employees. Unigrains, an investor specialisedin the agri-food sector, also holds capital. The seed business of Deleplanque is divided equally between the production of sugar beet, hybrid cereal, sunflower, and vegetable seeds on approximately 5,000 hectares and the sale of beet seeds, hybrid rye, sunflowers, soybeans and catch crops. The company has 3 seed stations and works with a network of 500 multipliers. Deleplanque has been a shareholder of Strube D&S GmbH since 2018.

Strube Research concentrates the future-oriented research and development activities of Strube D&S GmbH in a concentrated manner. Strube Research develops and propagates high-quality, healthy, and high-performance varieties of sugar beet, wheat, sunflower, and rye. Using classical breeding methods as well as sophisticated plant biotechnology, it drives progress in seed breeding as a partner to agriculture, industry, and trade. Strube Research breeds in high-tech laboratories, with state-of-the-art technology and the most modern greenhouses, and thus also constantly improves the seed quality of the crop varieties.

Applied Agricultural Research Organization for sugar beet, the French Institut Technique de la Betterave (ITB) is the interprofessional organ of the sugar beet industry: beet growers and manufacturers of sugar, alcohol, and ethanol. ITB is the leading and vital international referent to increase productivity and competitiveness of sugar beet, at level of the farm, of its territory and of its sector. At the heart of current and future scientific, technical and communication tools, the institute is in line with societal and environmental expectations.

INRAE is France's new National Research Institute for Agriculture, Food and Environment, created on January 1, 2020, It was formed by the merger of INRA, the National Institute for Agricultural Research, and IRSTEA, the National Research Institute of Science and Technology for the Environment and Agriculture.
